Storing Small Things in a Small Home

Living Room

Lots of little things tend to pile up in the living room. Remotes, games, mail, magazines and more may be making your living area look more like a dumping ground. Choosing furniture with storage is a great way to get these little things out of sight while keeping them handy for everyday use. Choose a coffee table or ottoman that opens up to reveal storage. Choose end tables with drawers. Even nightstands do great in the living room. You can even get couches and chairs that have storage areas hidden underneath the padding of the arms.

Kitchen

Kitchens have counter tops, which means there is a big flat space to catch everyone’s junk. Make sure that you limit the number of things you will allow on your counters by providing storage for everything. If your drawers are full of junk, use a divider for keeping pencils, pens, and other things that stay in the kitchen organized. If everyone drops their wallets, keys, purses and phones in the kitchen, make a designated area just for this. Install extra shelves or use wire racks inside of your cabinets to make use of the vertical space that may be going to waste.

Office

Office supplies can pile up if you don’t have a good storage system in place. A dresser is very useful in an office for storing all sorts of little things. You can also use shelving with containers for organizing office equipment and supplies. Hang a curtain to hide things that don’t go well with your décor.

Bedroom

We use a lot of things in our bedrooms that may not have a place to go. Jewelry, reading material, tissues, lotion and more can pile up on your bedside table. If you are bad about cramming more and more onto your nightstand, then you need some sort of storage system that works for your specific needs. Sometimes ditching that tiny nightstand and using a larger piece of furniture is a good idea. Or, keep the dresser near your bed so that you can use a couple of the bigger drawers for organizing all of your stuff. You can also use the area under the bed for keeping things that you know you’ll want access to while you’re in the bed.

Bathroom

The bathroom can get really junky because we use so many products every day. Add shelves and racks underneath the bathroom sink to make good use of that big empty space. You can use an art caddy designed for pens, pencils and paintbrushes for your make-up brushes and pencils. Keep make-up that you use on special occasions separate from your everyday make-up. Creating a place that is easy to access for your everyday items is the key to keeping the bathroom organized.
